Traitor
By: Matthew Ruff
Scooter Libby is a traitor. He was recently found guilty on four out of five charges consisting of obstruction of justice, perjury, and lying to federal investigators. These investigators were trying to uncover how CIA Operative Valerie Plame’s name was leaked to reporters in 2003.
Valerie was an “Undercover Operative”, meaning that she was a secret agent, working to protect America and its Allies from malicious foreign schemes, like terror attacks and espionage. Specifically, she worked in “counter-proliferation”, that is to say that she worked to prevent nuclear development in countries that might use nuclear weapons against us. She is also the wife of former American Ambassador Joseph Wilson, who dared to criticize the George Bush Administration’s handling of intelligence leading up to the Iraq War. Ambassador Wilson only exercised the most basic of civil liberties, free speech. We, as Americans, have the right to criticize our government. Without this right, we could quickly lose control of our country. However, it is apparent that everyone doesn’t see it that way. As an act of political vendetta, Mrs. Plame was exposed by someone in the Bush White House. That someone was Scooter Libby.
Mr. Libby uncovered an American Operative while she was still in the field, and very much in danger. She was, after all, our spy. Had she been captured, she could have been killed or jailed in a foreign country.
As an American, I am outraged. This is nothing short of treason on the part of Scooter Libby, and for President Bush to condone this activity by letting him remain free only adds insult to injury. What kind of message does this send to the American Public? Moreover, what kind of message does this send to the rest of the world? This nation has been weakened in many ways by the Bush Administration, and weakness - on the world stage - is a lightning rod for our enemies. Scooter, at the least, should be in a Federal Penitentiary for the rest of his life.
People should not fear their government; the government should fear the people.
Make it Strait in ’08!
